The method

What is the Socratic Spiral?

Socrates never accepted the first answer. He tested it and asked again. The book turns that habit into one method you can use with any AI assistant: the Socratic Spiral.

  1. Ask
Ask an open, specific question. Give context: who you are, what you need, what “good” looks like.
  2. Challenge
Question the answer. What is it assuming? What is the other side?
  3. Test
Check it against reality. Ask for evidence, sources, examples and consequences, and verify the important bits yourself.
  4. Refine
Improve the question, the answer and your own thinking, then go round again, one step higher, if needed.

Step wording: current draft of the book.

Think with AI, not instead of you

Let the AI quiz you and find the weak step in your argument, while the work stays yours.

Check before you trust

AI can be fluent and wrong. Test every answer that matters.

Measure it

Every chapter ends with one thing to count.

Same AI, different question

Ordinary prompt

“Write an essay about social media and mental health.”

Socratic prompt (Ask)

“I’m a first-year psychology student writing a 1,500-word argumentative essay. My question is: does heavy social media use cause anxiety in 16–22-year-olds, or are anxious people simply more likely to use it heavily? Don’t write the essay. Give me the three strongest arguments on each side and tell me what kind of evidence each relies on.”

Notice what changed. The AI didn’t write your essay; it made you a sharper thinker.
